About Us

Welcome to Mizen Shop

Mizen Head, Ireland’s Most Southwesterly Point, is a Signature Discovery Point on the Wild Atlantic Way.   We are open daily from mid March to the end of October and at weekends during the winter.

Mizen Head is a dramatic cliff edge experience with an iconic Bridge linking the Visitor Centre by the Car Park with the century old Irish Lights Signal Station perched on a knife edge of rock jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean.  It is a must visit experience.

The experience starts with the Visitor Centre on top of the cliffs.

Mizen Cafe serves great coffee, tea, snacks, sandwiches, hot food, homemade cakes and in the summer, ice cream cones!

There are washrooms, usually needed after the drive here!

Mizen Gift Shop caters for many tastes. There is a wide selection of toys. Souvenirs from Mizen Head are popular. Books, prints and cards make great gifts. There is some clothing, mainly locally designed hoodies and sweatshirts.

We host a number of West Cork Crafts artists and crafters. They have their own website and online shop at www.westcorkcrafts.ie

There are numerous displays and interpretations as well covering many aspects of the environment of the Mizen Peninsula. Plus a fully functional 5 screen Navigational AIDS Simulator, a mechanical tide clock showing a rescue at sea and a 1/10 cutaway model of the Fastnet Lighthouse.

Then you buy a ticket to cross the Bridge and visit the Irish Lights Mizen Head Signal Station.  On the way there are four additional paths to explore the cliffs, the Sea Arch walk, the Bridge overview walk (if you are not able for path down across the Bridge and the 99 steps back, this is for you)  the Dunlough Bay walk, with its magnificent up the coast to The Sheep’s Head and Beara Peninsulas, and to view under the Bridge, the Derrick walk.

The Keepers’ Quarters and the Workmen’s Quarters are open with  displays about the Lightkeepers’ way of life, Marconi, an AV  ‘ The Land is the Danger’ by Norris Davidson about the Irish Lights when the Lighthouses were working at full tilt, aspects of the Mizen Environment and Shipwrecks.

Plenty to see, but the main attraction is the vast Atlantic Ocean, the seabirds, the ship’s passing by and the wonderful views up the west and south coasts. Or it could be foggy and you will experience the Mizen as it was when ships came too close and the Mizen Fog Signal boomed out its warning.

We hope you will take some mementoes and gifts away from your visit.  If you have visited and forgot something or are not able to visit yet,  our online gift shop is here to share with you.
