1/10 scale cutaway model of the Fastnet Lighthouse
This model was made by Geoff McCarthy and Dave Otway, from Schull.
Geoff worked at the Mizen as a lightkeeper. He left it on the day it was automated 1993. Since then he has been the Attendant for Mizen Head Signal Station for the Commissioners of Irish Lights.
Dave Otway is a celebrated carpenter from Schull
Jules Thomas modelled the sea and rock features. At first the sea was actually water, but during the first season so many people threw in coins that the copper spoiled the rippling painted on the bottom. The money was collected, the water drained and it was newly painted. A wishing well was put nearby for the coins, but the water proved irresistible. So it had to be filled in and Jules created waves with gloop and painted them again!
Arnd Thomas (no relation), a trained cabinet maker living in the Schull area, created the lantern capping the scale model of the Fastnet Lighthouse.
